Oversize Mirror, yes! you can do it.

Today I want to share with you one of my DIY projects that I am very proud of.

Two years ago we moved to this beautiful house with tall ceilings. To be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed. I had no idea how I was going to decorate those walls.

I researched online about how to decorate tall walls. I found beautiful ideas with vertical mirrors, pictures, etc.

I researched oversize mirrors in different stores and online and I was awfully surprised when I saw the price. I decided to make one myself instead.

First, I thought about reusing the bathroom wall mirror that we were taking down when we remodel one of our bathrooms. I thought about just adding a frame and hanging it. How difficult could it be, right?!! So, I tried to cut the mirror by myself. A 9 food long mirror (yes, I am crazy), well guess what,. . . I broke it!!😭

I swear I followed the instructions about cutting glass very carefully, but it did not work for me. With my heart broken I went to the hardware store to see if I could find a frameless mirror. While checking the mirror area at the hardware store I found a packet of 12 X 12 mirror tiles. I remembered seeing tutorials of mirrors tiles so I thought I would give it a try.

DIY OVERSIZE MIRROR

MATERIALS

  • 1 sheet of plywood 4 ft. x 8 ft. ($22)

  • 6 packages of 12 in. x 12 in. Plain Edge Mirror Tiles (6-Pack) ($10 each pack)

  • 2 loctite mirror adhesive ($5 each)

  • 2 decorative trim moulding 8ft. long ($8 each)

  • 1 Ekena Millwork 24.75-in x 5.125-in Wood Applique ($29)

  • 1 heavy duty adhesive

  • 3 hangman 13-Piece French Cleat Picture Hanger Kit with Wall Dogs ($10each)

  • 6 units 1/4 in. x 2 in. RSS Structural Screws

  • 3 TOGGLER 0.25-in x 2.5-in Yellow Zinc Toggle Bolts

  • black spray paint

INSTRUCTIONS

  • First, you have to measure the wall where the mirror is going to be hung. I used a whole sheet of 4x8 plywood. Lay down the plywood and add the hangers, I used two on top and one in the bottom of the plywood. I used the screws that came in the package.

  • To hang it on the wall I used two structural screws that hit the stud and for the hole in the middle I used a toggle ancor. I wanted to be 100% sure the mirror would be hung strong and secured to the wall well. If you don't find a stud to screw to, use the toggle ancor in all the holes in the hanger.

  • I then applied the adhesive to the back of each single mirror tile and placed them on the plywood. I used 32 mirror tiles. Let the adhesive dry for one whole day. You want to be sure those mirrors tiles are very well secure on the plywood.

  • I sprayed paint on the trim and let it dry. Then I glued it to the border of the plywood. I did the same with the applique.

  • Once everything is set and secure find people to help you hang it on the wall. It is going to be heavy.

Let me know if you try it and if you have questions. ust leave a comment below, I would be glad to help.
